アパルーサ
アパルーサ (英語:Appaloosa) は、アメリカ原産のウマの品種で体の斑点が特徴である。体のタイプは種類が多く、改良の歴史に現われた品種の影響がみえる。毛色は原毛色の上に斑文が重なり、遺伝的に引き継がれた結果である。そのことからウマの毛色を決める遺伝子の研究において、アパルーサの斑文ほか身体的な特徴を決める遺伝子は「豹文の突然変異」 (LP: leopard complex mutation) と結びつくとして注目を集めている。また頻発性のウマのぶどう膜炎、豹文の変異遺伝子と関係の深い夜盲症がよくみられる。
アラブ種
アラブ(種) (Arab、Arabian) とは、ウマの品種の一つ。現存する馬の改良種の中で最初に確立した品種とされる。体高約150cm、体重約400kg。 サラブレッドよりは小柄で華奢な体躯で、速力もサラブレッドには劣るが、耐候性、耐久性に優れる。 その成立ははっきりしないが、アラビア半島の遊牧民、ベドウィンにより、厳格な血統管理の元に改良が進められ、品種として確立した。伝承によるとケヒレット・エル・アジュズ(「老婦人の牝馬」の意)という牝馬がアラブ種の根幹牝馬である。 サラブレッドはこのアラブを元にイギリスやその他の在来馬と掛け合わせて作られた品種であり、三大始祖は全てアラブ種かそれに類するターク、バルブ種である。特にダーレーアラビアンはジェネラルスタッドブックにおいて純粋なアラブとされている。また、サラブレッド成立後、主にフランスでこのアラブとサラブレッドを掛け合わせて作られたのがアングロアラブである。日本ではサラブレッドと共にこのアングロアラブも競走馬として多く用いられ、生産も盛んであった一方、アラブ自体はあまり普及しなかったため、日本でアラブといえば一般的にアングロアラブのことを指し、アラブは「純血」アラブと言わないと通じないことがある。

キシュベル(Kisbér、ハンガリー政府観光局はキシュベールと表記、キスバーとも、1873年 - ?)は、1870年代にイギリス・フランスで活躍したハンガリー出身の競走馬である。 父バッカーニアと母ミネラルの間にハンガリーの国立キシュベル牧場で生まれ、イギリスで調教を受けた。おもな勝ち鞍はエプソムダービー、パリ大賞典、デューハーストステークスの3つ。エプソムダービーは、イギリス(当時はアイルランド全土含む)以外で生産された馬としてグラディアトゥール(フランス生まれ)に次ぐ2頭目の制覇である。 引退後はドイツで種牡馬となり、3頭のドイチェスダービー馬(ハーデンベルク、Trollhetta、スパーバー)を出すなど成功、計3度ドイツチャンピオンサイアーを獲得した。1歳下のキンチェムとともにかつてのオーストリア=ハンガリー帝国の競馬・馬産レベルの高さを現在に伝えている。

クォーターホース
クォーターホース(Quarter horse)は、正式にはアメリカンクォーターホース(American quarter horse)と呼ばれるウマの品種の一つ。体高は150cm、体重は400kg程度。アメリカにおいて主として乗馬・牧畜作業・競馬用として使用。世界各地で400万頭余りが登録されており、事実上世界で最も頭数の多い品種である。

ケッテイ(駃騠)は、オスのウマとメスのロバの間に生まれるウマ科の雑種動物である。外見は、オスのロバとメスのウマの間に生まれたラバと似ている。
サラブレッド
サラブレッド(英語: Thoroughbred)とは、18世紀初頭にイギリスでアラブ馬やハンター(狩猟に用いられたイギリス在来の品種)等から競走用に品種改良された軽種馬である。 競走時には人を背負った状態で、数分間継続して50〜70km/hの速度で走る能力を持つ。2002年に日本国内で行われた1000mのレースにおいて、600m-800m区間の200m通過時間9.6秒(時速75km)が計測されたことがある。この馬は負担重量として56キロを背負っていた。 短距離ではさらに速い速度が計測されており、2005年にマウントプレザントメドウズで行われた402mの下級戦で終端速度時速84kmを観測している。ただし、この距離ではクォーターホースのほうが早く、同じ競馬場の同じコースにおいて、レース"中間で"時速92.4kmを観測している。 競馬以外には乗馬やポロなど多数の用途に使用される。オリンピックなどの馬術競技で活躍するサラブレッドも少数ながら存在し、アメリカ合衆国の障害飛越殿堂馬22頭のうち、サラブレッドは15頭にもおよぶ。 語源は Thorough [ 完璧な、徹底的な ] + bred [ 品種 ] で人為的に完全管理された血統を意味する。ここから「名家の出」「名門の出」の比喩としても用いられる。
シャイヤー
シャイヤー(Shire)は、馬の品種の1つ。重種に分類される。非常に大型の馬体と強い力、脚のふさふさ(距毛)が特徴。気性は大変おとなしく鈍重。原産国はイギリスで、ノルマン・コンクエストによって持ち込まれたヨーロッパ大陸の大型馬に由来する。 体高(肩までの高さ)は18ハンド(約183cm)が平均的、体重1トンを超える事も珍しくない。かつては10馬力を遙かに超える力の強さを生かして挽き馬として使われていたが、20世紀に進んだ農業の機械化によって絶滅の危機に瀕した。現在は保護活動もあり再び増加傾向にある。
シャギャ・アラブ
シャギャ・アラブ(ハンガリー語: shagya-arab )またはシャギア・アラブは馬の品種のひとつ。19世紀にオーストリア・ハンガリー帝国のバボルナ、メズーヘジェシュ、ラダウツ、ピバー、トポルチャンキーといった牧場で開発されたアラブ種の馬である 。今日、チェコ、オーストリア、ルーマニア、旧ユーゴスラビア諸国、ポーランド、ドイツおよびハンガリーでもっとも多く見られるが、ほかの国にも輸出され世界中で育成されている。現在の純血シャギャ・アラブの血統は、ラダウツ、バボルナ、トポルチャンキーのスタッドブックにすべての系統が遡ることができる。一部ではこの品種はアラブの一系統と考えられているが、少量の非アラブ血脈の存在によりアングロアラブまたはアラブ系種と見なされている。
スタンダードブレッド
スタンダードブレッド(Standardbred)とは、温血種・中間種に分類される馬の品種の1つ。別名アメリカントロッターとも。主な用途は競馬と乗馬であり、競走馬としての需要はサラブレッドに次ぐ規模にある。全速力ではサラブレッドにかなわないため平地競走に使われることは稀であるが、速歩が得意なため主に繋駕速歩競走に使用されている。
セルフランセ
セルフランセ(Selle Francais)は馬の品種の一つ。中間種に分類され、乗馬、馬術競技馬として優れた性質を持っている。 セルフランセは耐久力に優れ性質は温厚で素直。アングロアラブや軍用として価値を失ったアングロノルマン等を元にしてフランスで作られた。その他にサラブレッドやスタンダードブレッド等雑多な血が含まれている。成立したのが比較的最近の上、アングロノルマンや血統の怪しいアングロアラブをそのままセルフランセとして分類したため純系化が進んでおらず、体型などの性質は個体によってばらつきが大きい。ただ優秀な馬しかセルフランセとして登録できないため能力は高い。乗馬用として好んで使用され億単位の値が付くこともある。アテネオリンピック障害飛越競技で金メダルを獲得したブラジルのバロベットドロエト(en:Baloubet du Rouet)等有名な競技馬も多くいる。
ターパン
ターパン(Tarpan, 学名:Equus ferus ferus)は既に絶滅した野生のノウマの亜種である。ロシアで捕らわれていた最後の1頭は1909年に死亡した。 1930年代初頭、品種改良によってターパンを復活させようという試みが何度か行われた。その結果、ヘックホースやヘガルト、コニック等の品種が作出された。どれも元のターパンと似ており、特にグルロ色の毛色は似ていた。
トカラ馬
トカラ馬(トカラうま)は、ウマの一品種。トカラ列島(鹿児島県鹿児島郡十島村や喜界島で飼育されてきた日本在来馬である。 体高はおよそ100-120cmと小型で、在来馬の中でも最小クラス。ポニーに分類される。毛色は鹿毛のものがほとんどである。暑さに強く、古くから農耕や運搬、サトウキビ搾りなどに利用されてきた。1953年に鹿児島県の天然記念物に指定されている。
トラケナー
トラケナー(Trakehner)は、18世紀にプロイセン王国が品種改良によって生み出した軽種馬である。なお、日本ではトラケナーを生産したトラケーネン牧場の名が品種名と誤解され、トラケーネンと呼ばれている。
ドンゴラ
ドンゴラ(アラビア語: دنقلا、Dongola)は、スーダンの都市。人口13473人(2010年)。スーダン北部、ナイル川の河畔に位置し、北部州の州都である。80km上流には、かつてマクリア王国の首都であったオールド・ドンゴラがある。ドンゴラは小さな街であるが多文化が混ざり合う町であり、アメリカのドンゴラ市をはじめとするいくつかの町の名の由来となっている。街にはドンゴラ空港や、公立大学であるドンゴラ大学がある.。 ドンゴラは古くから上ヌビア地方の中心地であり、マクリア時代からイスラム教化された時代までの多くの遺跡が存在している。ドンゴラはマクリア王国領となったのち、1820年に北のエジプトのムハンマド・アリーの侵略を受け、エジプト領スーダンの一部となった。1884年から1885年にかけて、マフディーの乱において南のハルツームに孤立したイギリス軍のチャールズ・ゴードンを救出するための援軍がドンゴラを通過した。この連隊はナイル川をボートでさかのぼっていったため、これにちなんでやがてロンドンのテムズ川でおこなわれるようになったレガッタ競争のうちのひとつにドンゴラ・レースの名がつけられた。
ハクニー
ハクニー (Hackney) とは、中間種、乗系種に分類される馬の品種のひとつである。ハクネーとも。ハクニー歩様という脚を高く上げて馬車を引く優雅な仕草で知られ、馬車用としては最上級の品種。馬車競技に用いられるため輓系とされることもある。
バルブ種
バルブ種(Barb)は、北アフリカ原産の軽種馬である。その起源は不明。スペインにおいて在来種やアラブ種と交配され、アンダルシア馬と呼ばれる品種を生み出した。アンダルシア馬はその後ヨーロッパにおいて軽種馬の品種改良に積極的に活用された(バルブ種の流れを汲む代表的な品種としてリピッツァナーがある)ほか、大航海時代にアメリカ大陸に多く持ち込まれた。バルブ種はサラブレッドの品種改良の過程でも活用され、ジェネラルスタッドブックでは三大始祖の一頭ゴドルフィンアラビアンはバルブ種とされている(ただし現在ではゴドルフィンアラビアンはバルブと呼ばれる地方からイギリスに輸入されたものの、血統的にはアラブ種の血を多く受け継いでいたという見方が有力である)。
ファラベラ
ファラベラ(Falabella)は馬の品種の1つ。最も小さな馬種として知られ、ペットとしてアメリカ合衆国などで人気がある。原産国はアルゼンチン、品種名は品種を成立させた同国のファラベラ家が由来。 成立は20世紀前半、アンダルシア馬やシェットランドポニーを元に作られた。そして品種改良を経て徐々に小型化され、今日では体高70~78 cmが標準的となっている。小さいものでは体高40 cm台しかなく、犬程の大きさにしかならない。体形はアラブ種やサラブレッドに似るという。 アメリカ合衆国ではその愛くるしい姿と、丈夫さ、人へのなつきやすさからペットとして人気が高い。日本では1970年の大阪万博のときにアルゼンチンから贈られたファラベラをこどもの国で飼育していた(1992年、2000年に死ぬ)。また1978年に来日したアルゼンチンのホルヘ・ラファエル・ビデラ大統領が当時の皇太子明仁親王に贈呈した2頭がこどもの国で飼育されていた(2013年、2014年に老衰で死ぬ)。なお、小型すぎる事から乗用馬としては全く適さない。ペット以外には犬の数倍の寿命を持つ事から盲導馬への調教も試みられている。
ペルシュロン
ペルシュロン (Percheron) は、重種、冷血種に分類される馬の品種のひとつ。 原産地はフランス・ノルマンディーで、成立は8世紀に遡り、フランス原産の重種にアラブ種などの血が入っているとされる。毛色は青毛、芦毛などが多く、体型はサラブレッドに比べ足が短く、胴が太い。体高(肩までの高さ)は160 - 170センチメートルで、大きなものでは2メートルを超える。体重は1トンにもなり、サラブレッドの倍ほどにもなる。 性格はおとなしく鈍重だが、非常に力が強い。その強い力を生かし、馬車馬、挽馬、ホースショーなどに使われる。かつては軍馬として、全身甲冑を着こんだ重装騎兵の乗馬や、大砲の牽引などに用いられた。 日本では主に開拓期以降の北海道で導入された。ばんえい競馬にも使われ、初めて1億円を超える賞金を獲得したキンタローもペルシュロンの影響を強く受けている。 記録が残る最大の馬はドクトゥール・ル・ジェア (Dr Le Gear) という牡馬で体高7フィート(211センチメートル)、体重1,370キログラムにもなった。
ホルシュタイン種
ホルシュタイン (Holstein) は、馬の種類のひとつ。乗馬用として飼育される。 ドイツのシュレスヴィヒ=ホルシュタイン州が原産。成立は13世紀であり、もっとも古い温血種のひとつであると考えられている。在来の馬にスペインの馬やバルブ種を交配することで作られ、19世紀以降はサラブレッドの血が導入され改良された。体高は16-17ハンド(約163-173cm)ほど、毛色は鹿毛、黒鹿毛、青毛などが多い。運動力があり、温血種の中でもとくに耐久力に優れ、乗馬として優れた才能を発揮する。
ポトック
ポトック(フランス語:pottok, スペイン語:pottoka)は、フランスからスペインにまたがるバスク地方に産するポニーの品種。ピレネー山脈一帯で生育し、ピレネー馬とも呼ばれる。ポトックの名はバスク語で「小さい馬」を意味する語に由来している。 ポトックの起源は、先史時代のマドレーヌ文化期(紀元前14000年-紀元前7000年)のウマにまでさかのぼると考えられている。この時期の洞窟絵画にもポトックに似たウマの絵が描かれている。黒毛もしくは鹿毛で、肩までの高さが1.15m - 1.47m程度である。頭は大きく、小さな耳、短い首、長い背中に粗いたてがみをもつ。 大半は半野生馬であるが、農耕馬や鉱山の荷馬、サーカスの曲馬などにも使われた。混血が増えているため、ビダレーでは純血種を守るための試みが行なわれている。 エスプレットではポトックの馬市がたつ。バイヨンヌのラグビーチーム、アビロン・バイヨンヌはポトックをチームマスコットにしている。
マスタング
マスタングもしくはムスタング(英語: mustang)は、北アメリカ大陸のプレーリー地帯にスペイン人が持ち込んだ小型馬が野生化したもののことである。スペイン語のmestengoに由来し、この語は迷子になった、あるいは主人のいない家畜を意味する。 人間に服従しない独立の精神に富んだ性格で知られ、アーネスト・トンプソン・シートンのいわゆる『シートン動物記』の中の一作『だく足のマスタング』にもその姿が活写されている。一部は再家畜化されクォーターホース等の基礎になった。 北アメリカ大陸はウマ科の発祥の地であるが、最終氷期後に絶滅した。それ以降北米大陸に馬は存在しなかったが、一度野生の群れができると天敵がほとんどいなかったため急速に数を増し、一時その数は200万頭に達した。元になった個体はアンダルシアン等が中心だったと考えられるが、一部の群れにはサラブレッドやアラブ種等軽種の影響も見られる。現在は2万5000頭ほどが保護され残っている。
モウコウマ
モウコウマ(蒙古馬、英語: Mongolian horse、モンゴル語: Адуу, aduu)モンゴル周辺の中央アジア原産の馬。ポニーに分類され、体高は120cmから140cm程度と比較的小さい。モンゴルに古くから伝わる品種で、遊牧民によって多数が群れで飼育され、牧畜の管理、移動、伝令、輓用などに用いられた。乳はそのままでは飲めず馬乳酒(アルコール度の低い発酵酒)に加工される。毛色は青毛、鹿毛、河原毛が多い。たてがみが豊富で頸は短く太い。野生の馬と飼育馬を交配する伝統が見られたが野生種は現在では絶滅したと推定される。
モウコノウマ
モウコノウマ(蒙古野馬、英語: Przewalski's Wild Horse、学名: Equus ferus przewalskii)は、ノウマの一亜種である。かつてはシマウマ、ノロバを除いた唯一の現存する野生馬と考えられていたが、約5500年前に現在のカザフスタンで飼われていた家畜馬の子孫であるという説が唱えられた。その為に「本当の野生馬(家畜化されていないノウマ)はすでに絶滅している」との主張もある。
ラバ
ラバ(騾馬、英語: Mule、ラテン語: Mulus)は、雄のロバと雌のウマの交雑種の家畜である。北米、アジア(特に中国)、メキシコに多く、スペインやアルゼンチンでも飼育されている。 逆の組み合わせ(雄のウマと雌のロバの配合)で生まれる家畜をケッテイ(駃騠、英語: Hinny)と呼ぶが、ケッテイと比べると、ラバは育てるのが容易であり、体格も大きいため、より広く飼育されてきた。 家畜として両親のどちらよりも優れた特徴があり、雑種強勢の代表例である。
リピッツァナー
リピッツァナー(Lipizzaner)は、16世紀にオーストリアで品種改良によって生み出された軽種馬である。なお、日本ではリピッツァナーを生産していたリピッツァ牧場の名が品種名と誤解され、リピッツァと呼ばれている。
ロバ
ロバ(驢馬、馿馬)は哺乳綱奇蹄目ウマ科ウマ属ロバ亜属 (Asinus) の総称、もしくは、その1種 Equus asinus。以下では主に Equus asinus について述べる。 別名うさぎうま(兎馬)。漢語では驢(ろ)。古代より家畜として使用される。現生ウマ科の中で一番小型だが、力は強く、記憶力も良い。学名 Equus asinus(エクゥス・アシヌス)は、ラテン語で「馬・ロバ」の意。
与那国馬
与那国馬(よなぐにうま)は、八重山列島の与那国島(沖縄県八重山郡与那国町)で飼育されてきたウマの一品種である。また日本在来馬8馬種のひとつで、1969年3月25日に与那国町の天然記念物に指定されている。
宮古馬
宮古馬(みやこうま)は、宮古列島の宮古島(沖縄県宮古島市)で飼育されてきたウマの一品種である。また日本在来馬8馬種のひとつで、1991年(平成3年)1月16日に沖縄県の天然記念物に指定されている。
対州馬
対州馬(たいしゅうば、たいしゅううま)は、対馬(長崎県対馬市)を中心に飼育されてきた日本在来種の馬。坂路への適応と温順な性質を特徴とする。 他の日本在来馬と同様、体高147センチメートル以下のポニーに分類される小柄な馬だが、険しい山道の多い対馬にあって、かつては農耕馬や木材・農作物・日用品等の運搬に用いる駄馬として活躍し、生活に欠かせない存在であった。
御崎馬
御崎馬(みさきうま、岬馬)は、宮崎県串間市の都井岬に生息する日本在来馬の一種。国の天然記念物に指定されている。
月毛
月毛(つきげ、英: palomino、羅: gilvus/gilvus spadix)とは、原毛色が栗毛または栃栗毛で、変異型MATP遺伝子(クリーム様希釈遺伝子)をヘテロで持つ馬が発現する毛色のこと、またはこの毛色を持つ馬そのものを指す。クリーム色から淡い黄白色の被毛を持つ。
木曽馬
木曽馬(きそうま)とは長野県木曽地域(木曽郡)を中心に飼育されているウマの一品種である。また日本在来馬の一つでもある。岐阜県飛騨地方でも飼育されている。 日本在来種は他に北海道和種(北海道、俗称:道産子)、野間馬(愛媛県今治市野間)、対州馬(長崎県対馬市)、御崎馬(宮崎県都井岬)、トカラ馬(鹿児島県トカラ列島)、宮古馬(沖縄県宮古諸島)、与那国馬(沖縄県八重山諸島)がいるが、本州の在来種は木曽馬のみである。 一時絶滅寸前であったが木曽馬保存会が中心に活動が行なわれた結果、飼育数は増加した。しかし以前のような乗用、農耕を目的とした需要はなく、現在は200頭以下 という。 平安時代から江戸時代にかけて、武士の馬として使用された。 起源ははっきりしていないが、元々は蒙古の(大陸系の)馬である。一説では紀元前1世紀の漢で改良された「蒙古草原馬」が2~3世紀、朝鮮半島経由で渡来したという。この馬が木曽地域という山岳地帯で飼育された影響で、木曽馬となったとされる。
河原毛
河原毛(かわらげ、英: buckskin、羅: gilvus badius)とは、原毛色が鹿毛で、変異型MATP遺伝子(クリーム様希釈遺伝子)をヘテロで持つ馬が発現する毛色である。薄墨毛と混同されやすいが、別の遺伝子による。 関連する毛色にSmoky Blackがある。これは、原毛色が青毛、かつクリーム様希釈遺伝子をヘテロで持つ馬のことを言う。遺伝上は河原毛ではないが、日本馬事協会はこの毛色を定義していないため、河原毛または青鹿毛として登録されている馬の中に、この毛色を持つ馬が含まれている可能性がある。
粕毛
粕毛(かすげ、英: Roan)は馬の毛色のひとつ。原毛色に白色毛が混毛し、体が灰色っぽく見える馬のこと、またはその状態そのものを指す。芦毛や薄墨毛と非常に混同されやすい毛色であるが、別の毛色である。 原毛色により、栗粕毛(原毛色が栗毛系)、鹿粕毛(原毛色が鹿毛系)、青粕毛(原毛色が青毛系)と区別する。
野間馬
野間馬(のまうま)はウマの一品種である、また日本在来馬の一つとしても知られている。2018年現在日本の野間(愛媛県今治市)で飼育されている。体高はおよそ110 - 120センチメートルと小型で、ポニーに分類される。毛色は栗毛、鹿毛が中心である。
駁毛
駁毛(ぶちげ、英: Pinto/Pattern)は、馬の毛色の一つで、体幹部に大きな白斑のあるもの。あるいはそういった特徴を備える馬そのものを指すこともある。日本では、原毛色が勝るものを鹿駁毛、栗駁毛、白斑が勝るものを駁鹿毛、駁栗毛などとする。 登録団体によっては駁毛として一括に登録されるが、厳密に言えば駁毛馬の中にも色々なパターンがある。本稿ではこれらについても併せて記述する。
