In Canada and the United States, a white-coated German Shepherd Dog can be registered as a White Shepherd with either the American White Shepherd Association or with the United Kennel Club. It may also be registered with the Canadian Kennel Club or the American Kennel Club as a German Shepherd with the coat color white; a white coat is a disqualifying fault for conformational showing in those two societies, but does not disqualify the dog from participation in performance trials. The United Kennel Club recognized the White Shepherd as a breed on April 14, 1999.
